When to take ashwagandha: morning, afternoon or night?

Short answer: the best time to take ashwagandha is the time you will take it every day. The clinical studies on KSM-66 ashwagandha measured results after 8 weeks of daily use, not after one dose, so a consistent daily habit matters more than the exact hour. We put it at 3pm in golden hour: late enough to meet the afternoon slump, early enough to leave the evening for magnesium.
What the research used
The best-known trial gave 64 adults 600 mg of KSM-66 root extract a day for 60 days. Perceived stress scores fell by 44% and serum cortisol was 27.9% lower than at the start, with placebo showing much smaller changes (Chandrasekhar et al., 2012).* A later trial using the same 600 mg daily dose for 8 weeks reported better sleep quality versus placebo (Langade et al., 2019).* Neither study depended on a specific time of day.
Morning, afternoon or night?
- Morning: easy to remember, pairs with breakfast. Fine if that is when your routine is strongest.
- Afternoon (our pick): the 2–4pm window is when many people reach for a second coffee. An adaptogen here supports the body's response to everyday stress without adding caffeine.*
- Night: some people prefer it before bed. In the full day set, the night slot belongs to magnesium glycinate, so ashwagandha moves earlier.
With or without food?
Either works. If capsules bother an empty stomach, take them with a snack.
How long until you notice it?
Plan on 4 to 8 weeks of daily use, which is what the trials measured. That is one reason dygn is built around a 90-night course.
How much?
The studied dose is 600 mg of KSM-66 a day. golden hour contains exactly that, in 2 capsules.
Who should ask a doctor first
Talk to your healthcare provider before using ashwagandha if you are pregnant or nursing, take thyroid, sedative, blood-pressure or immune-suppressing medication, or have a medical condition.
