Lion's mane in the morning: what it is and what the studies say

Short answer: take lion's mane in the morning, with or without coffee. It is a caffeine-free functional mushroom (Hericium erinaceus), studied for focus and mental clarity.* first light gives 1,000 mg of fruiting body and mycelium, standardized to 40% polysaccharides, in 2 capsules.
What the studies say
In a placebo-controlled trial of 41 adults aged 18–45, people were faster on a focus and attention task 60 minutes after a single 1.8 g dose than with placebo. After 28 days of daily use, they also reported less subjective stress (Docherty et al., 2023).* An earlier 16-week trial in older Japanese adults found better scores on a cognitive function scale while they took lion's mane daily, compared with placebo (Mori et al., 2009).*
Why the morning?
Focus is a daytime job. Taking it at breakfast also anchors it to a habit you already have, which is the most reliable way to take anything daily.
Can I take it with coffee?
Yes. Lion's mane contains no caffeine, so it does not add to your coffee. Many people take first light with their first cup.
Fruiting body or mycelium?
The fruiting body is the mushroom itself. Mycelium is the root-like network it grows from. Labels that state a polysaccharide percentage tell you more than labels that do not. first light uses both, standardized to 40% polysaccharides.
How long until you notice it?
Some effects were measured after one dose, others after 4 weeks or more of daily use. We recommend a 90-day course.
Who should ask a doctor first
Avoid lion's mane if you are allergic to mushrooms. Ask your healthcare provider first if you are pregnant or nursing, take medication or have a medical condition.
